The San Francisco District Attorney Bureau of Investigations consists of sworn peace officers per 830.1 of the California Penal Code. Under the supervision of Chief of Investigations James Kerrigan, the San Francisco District Attorney's Bureau of Investigations assists prosecutors in preparing and organizing cases for court, including locating missing witnesses and organizing evidence for presentation at trial. Additionally, we assist various local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to ensure thorough investigations are conducted. Our investigators specialize in investigative areas divided broadly into multiple units.
In both the Trial Preparation and Special Prosecution Units, San Francisco District Attorney Investigators work with law enforcement officers from various jurisdictions including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the National Guard, U.S. Marshals, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, California Department of Insurance, California Department of Justice, University of California Police, San Francisco Sheriff’s Department, United States Secret Service, and the San Francisco Police Department.

- Witness protection and relocation on homicide and gang-related cases;
- Investigations of officer-involved shootings and deaths in police custody;
- Responses to family child abductions, often requiring interstate or international travel to execute arrests and recover children;
- Forensic analysis of computer and electronic evidence;
- Assignment to task forces including Economic Crimes Task Force (ECTF), Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team Task Force (REACT) and Northern California Regional Intelligence Center (NCRIC)
