Trial Preparation Unit

The Trial Preparation Unit is responsible for all post-charging investigations not performed by the arresting agency . The work required to bridge the gap between a chargeable criminal case and a prosecution sufficient enough to demonstrate to a Jury that the findings of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt are probable include the following investigative steps:
- The location and production of witnesses and victims for court, including transportation and security;
- Interviews of witnesses and victims;
- Follow up at crime scenes, including photography, measurements, and diagrams;
- Production of documentary evidence, including criminal, driving, property, firearms, and medical records;
- Production of physical evidence, including recordings and photographs;
- Writing of reports and search warrants;
- Service of search and arrest warrants;
- Courtroom testimony
California Witness Relocation and Assistance Program (CalWrap)
The California Witness Relocation and Assistance Program (CalWRAP) provides protection of witnesses and their families, friends, or associates who are endangered due to ongoing or anticipated testimony in gang, organized crime, or narcotic trafficking cases or in other cases that have a high degree of risk to the witness. The CalWRAP reimburses California's District Attorneys for expenses incurred by agencies during the protection of witnesses. |
Domestic Violence Unit (DV)
San Francisco District Attorney Investigators assigned to the Domestic Violence Unit are highly skilled and exclusively trained in handling stalking, elder abuse and domestic violence cases. In most cases, once charges are filed, investigators are assigned to assist and work closely with Assistant District Attorneys to ensure all evidence is obtained and cases are properly prepared for trial. DA Investigators also partner with local law enforcement agencies to locate additional witnesses and identify additional information that is needed to secure a successful prosecution.

YGC (Youth Guidance Center) Unit
San Francisco District Attorney Investigators assigned to the Youth Guidance Center provide prosecution and investigative support to Assistant District Attorneys and their legal staff. This is done by locating prosecution victims and witnesses and by conducting supplemental pretrial investigations, that may include obtaining statements, collecting evidence and serving subpoenas. DA Investigators are also responsible for locating and citing parents/guardians and juveniles for truancy related violations.
